Gravel chips windscreens Continued from page 1 Chris says he has driven all round the world, and it is only in Marlborough that he has had so many chipped and broken windscreens. The cause of these is the roads under construction and the chip re-sealing, he says. “The roads aren’t swept clear and the stones build up on the sides and in the middle and it doesn’t take much for a truck to swing wide and flick the stones up into cars.” Chris says the repair shop where his car is repaired had about 20 windscreens to fix when he took his car in last time.

“I’m told this stretch of road is the worst in New Zealand for windscreen breakages.” The Sun spoke to three windscreen repairers and they confirm there has been an increase in windscreen repairs. They said the damage was from road repairs on State Highway 1 and 6 and many customers had complained about them. Marlborough Roads highway manager Frank Porter said the roading agency hasn’t received any complaints directly about windscreen damage this summer. He says chip seal is used on Marlborough highways, and on many

highways around New Zealand, as it is more economical than asphalt surfacing, which can cost between five to 10 times more than chip seal. Chip seal also gives greater flexibility than asphalt treatment, he says, and once it has settled in, the sealed section should last around 10 years. “As we know how frustrating it can be when windscreens are damaged, Marlborough Roads focuses on minimising the risk of loose chips. “We use a number of different techniques to help prevent damage from loose chips, ranging from using single coat seals to sweeping loose chips after sealing.”

During sealing operations, temporary lower speed limits are put in while the chips roll and lock in, he says, to reduce the chance of chips being flicked up by passing vehicles. “This requires drivers to play their part as well by adhering to the temporary speed limit and reducing the risk of windscreen damage to theirs and others’ vehicles. “Marlborough residents appreciate the reasons why we need to do this. In a survey of all New Zealand highways, Marlborough residents rated our temporary speed limits at work sites as the most appropriate in the country.”

Royal honour for Brian Powell By Cathie Bell Marlborough man Brian Edward Powell was presented with his royal honour last week. Br ia n wa s g iven h is Queen’s Service Medal by Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman in a private ceremony on Friday, because Brian’s health stopped him being able to travel to Government House in Wellington. The ceremony was held in the Marlborough District Council Chambers and was attended by his family. The award was made for Mr Powell’s services to heritage preservation and the community. Alistair says it is a privilege to be able to recognise a man who has led a long and useful life of service to rural Marlborough. “You exemplify the Kiwi character that we admire;

the hardworking, practical, problem-solving chap who has been willing to take the helm on so many projects for all the right reasons – to help make your community a better place.” Brian is a longstanding member of Federated Farmers serving a term as president in 1997-98. He has been Federated Farmers representative on the Marlborough Acclimatisation Society and the Marlborough Meat and Wool Board. For many years he hosted primary school visits to his Fabians Valley farm where he had a collection of artefacts of early settlement and he was instrumental in the restoration of an old cob building occupied by early settlers. In 2008 he wrote a history of Fabians Valley and Northbank. He has given 45 years’

service as chairman of the Northbank Settlers Association. Brian has had a long association with the Outward Bound Trust dating back to its establishment at Anakiwa

in 1962. He is a life member of the Trust and served four terms on its Members Council. In Renwick, he was on the Community Hall committee for six years until 2013.

He also established the Renwick Community Garden at the Anglican Community Church. For the past 41 years he has also served as a Justice of the Peace.

Buddy bench for friends Story and photo by Celeste Alexander A Grovetown School class has come up with a heartwarming and kind initiative that aims to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship in the playground. Students Patrick Andrews and Maia Keen spearheaded the idea to build a ‘buddy bench’, a project that their whole class has been

involved with. “We thought it would be a good idea if people didn’t have friends, that they could sit on the bench and someone will come over and talk to them,” they say. Teacher Louise Hedlund says at the time the class was learning about what was special to them, and how to be guardians of the environment.

The class designed their own benches and two winning designs were voted on. They were drawn by Claudia Dick and Solomon Hedlund-Knight. From the two, one design was created and Louise’s father Phil Hedlund came to the school and helped the students to build them. Two were built, one low enough for junior students and the other

for seniors. Once completed the students carved their names onto the bench seats and they now sit proudly in the play area. Already they have proved a hit, Louise says. “They have been used a lot and I’ve had one student say they had made a new friend from it, which was so cute,” she says.

Whalers inspire song T he exploits of t he Marlborough Sounds whalers have inspired a touring folksinger to compose a song. Folksinger Nigel Parry this week started a South Island tour, which will see him play in Picton at Le Café on April 20. Before starting the tour, he spent some time in Picton talking with local historians about whalers, and their music and songs, and played them a song he has written about the Perano whalers, “Nine pairs of eyes”. “I wrote ‘Nine pairs of eyes’ last year, and started performing it at music festivals. It always goes down well.” Nigel says he has always been interested in the Marlborough Sounds, going back to when he worked at Interislander. While at the Picton museum, he was given a song from 1919 that was about whaling in the Sounds, to the tune of an Irish song, ‘Mountains of Mourne’. “There will be other ones out

there.” He wants to hear from people who know more about the songs whalers performed in their spare time, and would also like to know more about the history of the Federal Hotel in Picton. “It was a very prominent part of the Picton foreshore. Local stories and local songs would be really interesting…I have developed a fascination for that.” Nigel now lives in Wellington and in the past four years has performed at folk events and music venues around New Zealand, festivals and live on radio and in the UK, France and Canada. The latest high profile performance was in front of thousands at the People’s Climate March from the steps of New Zealand’s Parliament, performing a new song ‘When The Rain Comes’. By Cathie Bell A public meeting will be held in Renwick later this month to discuss how the upgrade of the township’s drinking water might be paid for. The meeting will be on Wednesday 27 April, from 7pm to 9pm, organised by Renwick Smart & Connected’s Water Group, to discuss funding formulas for improvements to water supply, set out in the Consultation Document relating to Council’s 2016-17 Annual Plan. Marlborough District Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says testing of Renwick’s new water supply wells at Conder’s Bend

will be completed in the next few months. Once the test pumping data is complete, the resource consenting process can begin and work can proceed toward the installation of new pumps, scheduled for 2018/19, he says. “That means we may well have another two summers where water must be managed carefully. The Renwick community was amazing in the way they handled their water use last season and we will work with them again over next summer because it’s going to be 2018/19 before the new supply is in place.” The latest measurements taken of the Wairau Aquifer

have provided the reassurance that Renwick’s water supply should be secure until next summer with this year’s rainfall having restored the health of the aquifer, Stephen says. He says the recent rain has lifted the aquifer and the Renwick water supply is looking very healthy again. “The aquifer level at the Renwick supply bores is now 3.2 metres above the pumps and water demand is now down to about 1300 cubic metres a day. With recent rain, the cooler nights and the heavy morning dew we’re now getting, there’s not the same demand for water.” The support of the Renwick Smart & Connected Group

In the letter box Dear Ed, It’s hard to think that winter is on its way but, it is and we should be prepared for it. What I would like to see happen is that all ‘junkmail’ inclusive of get fit, political, churches, electoral, and any other type of info that a lot of people throwaway, must be placed into the letter boxes, not the paper holders. One gust of wind and away they go, usually down the driveway where the owners don’t want this rubbish. While on the subject of rubbish, how come that one local newspaper is delivered by hand into the letter boxes while another thinks it’s their given right to throw it at the letter box? Yes, they miss everyone. It’s a disgrace while other towns and cities throughout New Zealand place their papers, this does include Property Press, into the letter box or holders. I know of others besides myself who while walking pick up this rubbish and put it where it belongs and should have been put there in the first instance. The letter box!! Pams charitable shop Dear Ed, For almost thirty years, PAMS shop in Queen Street has supplied good, clean and inexpensive clothing and linen to so many customers. This has been achieved only by the wonderful contributions of goods without which we would have been unable to carry on. All our profits are returned to worthy causes with Marlborough – a list of which is displayed in the shop. We have four collection bins around Blenheim, which are emptied twice weekly. Unfortunately, we also receive a great deal of unusable dirty and worn out items as well as a large amount of household rubbish, which of course has to be sorted and disposed of.

It is not unusual to find old TV sets, microwaves, broken vacuum cleaners etc, left either beside the bins, and even quite recently, the inside of a piano. Cost of dumping these types of ‘contributions’ have to be paid for by us. For example the dumping of a TV set is $15. At the shop we have thirty volunteers and a further eight volunteers at the sorting depot, and we are indebted to these wonderful people for all the time they give to the work of PAMS shop. Finally, on behalf of all our volunteers I would like to say a big thank you to all the wonderful customers, who have supported PAMS shop over the last thirty years. one on one with the Sun

Real estate and car racing At first glance Melissa Gifford looks every bit the office professional, but outside of her career in real estate her true passion lies in mechanics and speedway racing. Melissa talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about her passion for stock car racing and where it all began.

Melissa has worked for Farmlands Real Estate (formerly CRT) since she was aged 16 and even gained her real estate license at 17. Week days are spent working in an office while in the weekends Melissa is often working underneath a car. “Sundays are always a frantic hand-scrubbing session so my hands are respectable for work. It gets harder every time,” she laughs. It was from Melissa’s country upbringing that she developed her love for cars and machinery. She grew up on a 600 acre farm on the opposite side of State Highway 6 from the northwestern entrance to Eastern States Speedway. Her childhood was spent mostly outside working and playing in the family workshop watching her father and grandfather, or out and about on the farm. At the age of five she was riding a fourwheeler. Before the age of 10 she was helping to drive the family’s old paddock hack Viva Deluxe and even drove an old Ford 5000 tractor. She says on both sides of her family farm-

ing and cars were strong passions. Melissa’s father, Allan Gifford, has always owned ‘hotted up’ Fords she says, and is also the president of the Marlborough Ploughing Association.

“I spent my teenage years in the ‘boy racer’ scene which I thought I would never grow out of.”

“Not an opportunity goes by that they hit me up about Dad teaching me the tricks to carry on the tradition,” she laughs. Growing up, she says, her passion was horses but it didn’t take long before her love for horses turned to a love for horsepower. “At that stage I had started playing with

my own cars, doing bits and pieces on them myself. “This became more frequent and I soon began modifying my own cars and doing all sorts of stuff in the shed,” she says. In her early 20’s Melissa turned her attention to speedway and started pit-crewing for a stockcar driver. During the 2011/2012 season she began pit crewing solely for Gavin Marshall and found herself spending more and more of her weekends in the workshop. “Gavin is an engineer and mechanic for his own company and has taught me a lot. I have now stepped up to doing most things on vehicles including full motor swaps. “This has been one of my happiest achievements,” she smiles. Working on a stockcar was one thing, but Melissa was becoming more interested in racing one, a goal she has since achieved. She began a mentor programme earlier this season with Eastern States Speedway. As her own car was not ready, she raced Gavin’s stockcar a number of times to be signed off.

Melissa then went into another stockcar owned by Sam Thompson of REM Engineering who was ‘generous enough’ to allow her to race it. “Crashes and contact between stockcars is common so I have come to know the concrete wall quite well now,” she laughs. “Driving the stockcar is a lot different to anything else I have experienced. Everything happens so fast and you need to be so smooth in your driving, only turning the steering wheel ever so slightly around the corners and trusting in the setup of the car to pull itself around without spinning or pushing into the wall.” Melissa has since raced in her first championship event away from Blenheim at the Stock Shock last month. Plans are already in motion for Monster Motorsports 2016/2017 and in the lead up to this she says she is taking every opportunity to jump straight into the thick of it and learn. “I can’t wait to get back out there and get more track time so I can get more experience in the handling, watching and reading of a race,” she says.

By Celeste Alexander Thousands of red poppies have been pinned and boxed by a group of dedicated women, volunteering their time to support veterans and their families. Members of the Marlborough RSA Women’s Section came together last Friday to finalise their preparations ahead of this week’s Poppy Day. To be held this Friday, Poppy Day is an annual event that sees volunteers from the RSA hit the streets to sell artificial poppies. Boxes have also been delivered to businesses throughout Marlborough for people to make a donation in exchange for a poppy. Proceeds collected locally go into Marlborough RSA’s welfare account to support the welfare of veterans, their widows and widowers.

President of the Marlborough RSA Women’s Section Noeleen Thomson says every year the generosity shown by the community continues to grow. “It’s absolutely outstanding, people are so generous. “We are so fortunate to have such amazing support, and I want to thank our volunteers who go out collecting donations,” she says. Last year Poppy Day in Marlborough raised $30,000. “It’s this kind of support that enables the RSA to continue offering its support to veterans. It’s an amazing organisation to be part of and I just love it,” Noeleen says. Please show your support this Friday for Poppy Day. Wear your red poppy proudly on Anzac Day.

Poppy is truly a ‘national icon’ With 90 years of history, the Poppy Day Appeal is one of the oldest nationwide appeals conducted by a voluntary welfare organisation in New Zealand. The RSA Poppy is truly a national icon. In contrast to the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, however, the RSA did not hold its inaugural Poppy Appeal in association with Armistice Day 1921 (11 November 1921), but instead chose the day prior to Anzac Day 1922. The reason is one of those quirks of history: the ship carrying the poppies from France arrived in New Zealand too late for the scheme to be properly publicised prior to Armistice Day, thereby forcing the Association to postpone its Poppy campaign until the day prior to Anzac Day 1922. The decision nonetheless established

an historic precedence whereby Poppy Day – as the day was known from the outset – became forever associated with Anzac Day in New Zealand, thus setting it apart from the rest of the world where it is largely associated with Armistice Day. The first Poppy Day in New Zealand, 24 April 1922, was met with great public enthusiasm, with many centres selling out of their supply of poppies early in the day. Few appeals can claim the history and public recognition as that of the RSA’s Poppy Day Appeal. The Poppy is not only visible on Poppy Day and Anzac Day but at funerals of returned servicemen and women. It is also taken on pilgrimages to be laid at New Zealand war memorials and war graves around the world. The RSA Poppy is truly a national icon.

NZSO brass helping hand Story and photo by Cathie Bell The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra played in Blenheim last night, and ASB Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley is well-known as a brass enthusiast, and took the opportunity to get students to meet NZSO principal trombonist David Bremner. David is also the musical director of the National Youth Brass Band, which he hopes to bring to Marlborough in January next year, Kevin says. He also leads a group called Bonanza Brass, which Kevin hopes will also play in Blenheim. Yesterday afternoon David met with college students Dylan Pope, Susie Grigg, and Ollie Scherf who all play the trombone. Kevin says Dylan has been learning for two years and plays the bass trombone; Susie has been learning since September last year and is second trombone; and Ollie Scherf, who is a tuba player and also learning trombone. David says he has played in Blenheim ‘quite a few times with a few groups’ but it was cool to be playing with the NZSO, in the new theatre. “Hopefully, it is the first of many times.”

Electric cars to make power stop Story and photo by Cathie Bell Once you’ve driven an electric car, you’ll never want to go back to petrol or diesel, electric car owner Peter Wilkinson says. Peter will be one of several Marlborough electric car owners joining the convoy of electric vehicles travelling from Cape Reinga to the Bluff to promote the new form of transport. C a l le d “ L e a d i ng t he Charge”, the convoy will have Nissan Leaf, Tesla S, and BMW electric cars for people to look at on Monday, April 18, either in Picton by the EcoWorld Aquarium at 8.30am or at 10am by 100%

For someone who doesn’t travel out of the district or as a second car, it’s a no brainer.” Peter has a Nissan Leaf and says it has restored his enjoyment in driving. “I have driven around this planet 13 and a half times in

my working life, and I love driving the Leaf – it is such a pleasure to drive.” In the year he’s had it, Peter estimates he’s driven 10,000 kilometres, most of it for free. “If anything happened to this car, we’d be straight out buying another one. decay is an important public health issue with significant ethnic and socio-economic health inequalities relating to both oral health status and access to our regional dental services. “Every year, our dentists have the unenviable task of surgically removing teeth from 250 children under general anaesthesia.” Chris says the board will engage with the law change process, its three councils and the community. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says he has long said that fluoridation shouldn’t be a district council responsibility. “Councillors here have been well briefed on the issue and understand the health issue that exists here particularly with child dental health.”

He says he’d expect dialogue between the council and health board once the law change has occurred and the health board has made its decision. If a decision to fluoridate goes through, it would cover the six council water supplies. Jonathan says New Zealand has high rates of preventable tooth decay and increasing access to fluoridated water will improve oral health, and mean fewer costly trips to the dentist for more New Zealanders. “This change could benefit over 1.4 million New Zealanders who live in places where networked community water supplies are not currently fluoridated.” Peter says moving the decision-making process from local

councils to DHBs is recognition that water fluoridation is a healthrelated issue. Deciding which water supplies should be fluoridated aligns closely to DHBs’ current responsibilities and expertise, he says. “It makes sense for DHBs to make fluoridation decisions for their communities based on local health priorities and by assessing health-related evidence.” In 2014 the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor and the Royal Society of New Zealand, assisted by a panel of experts, concluded there is compelling evidence that fluoridation of water at the established and recommended levels produces broad benefits for the dental health of New Zealanders.

Service to stamps honoured Blenheim man Jim Parks was honoured last Thursday for 24 years service to the Marlborough Stamp Collectors Club Inc. Jim, a World War II RAF aircrew veteran, first joined the club in 1988 and became the Stamp Circuits manager in 1991, but now at the age of 95 he has stepped down. Duties he carried out over the years included managing the distribution of sales booklets containing postage stamps and materials

to ‘circuit’ members and receiving and recording monies for sales. Within the circuit there are around 60 collectors, half of which are local. The club thanked Jim for his dedication over the years. “We are extremely grateful for these duties performed by Jim over the past 24 years. Very few sales booklets have gone astray in that time and our club funds have increased considerably from commissions collected,” members say.

Talented young sportsmen chosen from region Eleven of the most talented emergent young sportspeople in Nelson and Marlborough have been selected for the regional Pathway to Podium programme designed to help them become the next generation of New Zealand sporting stars. Four Marlborough secondary students have been chosen for the talent development programme run regionally by Sport Tasman in conjunction with Sport NZ and High Performance Sport NZ. Hockey players Jack Boon and Eli Kepes of Marlborough Boys’ College were selected. They are members of the Capital under 18 squad. Alistair Gifford of MBC was the sole sailor selected, having represented NZ at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in China and other regattas overseas, including the Radial Youth World Champs in Canada last year. Alistair, whose main focus this year is to win a place in the NZ team for the Youth World Champs, says being chosen for the programme was an ‘awesome opportunity’ to learn what it takes to be a high performance athlete. “It will give me access to more resources and hopefully help me lift a notch or two.’’

Stubbs to represent NZ David Stubbs has been rewarded for his NZ Wakeboard championship win. David has been named to represent his country at the Asia Oceania Championships to be held at Lake Karapiro during February next year. David will be joined in the NZ team by Nik Gibson and Paul Maguire. There will be more than sixty competitors and twelve countries competing in the wakeboard competitions and NZ will be hoping to improve on past competitons and get onto the victory dias. Other water disciplines, including waterski racing and barefoot, will boost competitor numbers to more than 200, making for a real festival of towed watersports.

Blenheim racing pigeon club birds experienced another fairly testing race in their young bird program from Cheviot on Saturday. The flock was liberated at 9.45 am into clear skies and no wind for the 155 km flight but obviously encountered misty conditions through the ranges which impeded their speed. The results were spread with the winning birds making 55 km/hr to the loft of Alister Cooper of Renwick, close behind in second place was Chris Bensley on 54.3 km/hr followed even closer by 54 km/hr for Two Fishers partnership recording third position. Shirley Morrison of Spring Creek was fourth with 52 km/hr and Cindy Kirkwood also of Spring Creek into fifth with 46 km/hr followed by dad Carl on 44 km/hr. Nearo lofts in the Aratere Valley had Rob on 37 km/hr and Neil with 36 km/ hr and Donald Morrison recording 34 km/hr.
